The Reach of Government – Jared

So we all know government is pretty big. And how government is getting bigger. I have just finished reading excerpts of Alexis de Tocqueville’s Democracy in America, a brilliant work of an early 19th century Frenchman. It is possibly the best work ever written about American culture, American society, American religion and American government.
One thing de Tocqueville describes that I do not have time to get into here is how despostism may arise in a democracy in ways which are completely unexpected and run counter to our perceptions of despotic government. I will have to elaborate on this further but what I want to point out is this: an overreaching government diving into the personal lives of its citizens is a government taking steps toward despotism. Let me provide you with a recent example.
